The Lazio manager Vladimir Petkovic has said that he is extremely happy with the performance of his players in the recent 2-1 win over Cagliari. Lazio have emerged as the surprising contenders for the title along with Juventus this season. After being extremely solid in the first half of the season, they have been able to overtake the likes of Napoli, Roma, and Inter Milan into the second position. Even though they are nine points behind the leaders Juventus, the Lazio manager is convinced that the remaining the title race. The 2-1 win over Cagliari was an important result to keep them in the hunt for the title.

The win is even more important considering the fact that Juventus lost at home to Sampdoria 2-1. As a result, the gap has been cut to just six points from nine points. Cagliari surprisingly opened the scoring in the second half through a goal from Sau. However, Lazio managed to make a stunning comeback by scoring two goals in the remaining 15 min of the match. Konko equalised the score for Lazio, while Candreva’s penalty just 4 min from time helped them take all three points. Lazio is also aided by the two red cards given to Cagliari.

“The players always believe they can do it. There was great character on display, fighting back to turn the result around. I couldn’t see the penalty incident, but it did seem that there was contact. What mattered anyway is that we remained united and created a great deal,” said the Lazio manager after the match. Even though they are just six points below the Italian champions Juventus, they have a considerable distance to make up when it comes to the goal difference. Juventus have been far more prolific in front of goal this season.
