Lazio’s amazing run of form came to an end after the team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Napoli. This is a huge setback for the team currently chasing for a top three place.

This was seen as a six-pointer given that Napoli’s position as the third best team in Italy was under severe threat. Rafa Benitez’ team has now opened a two-point advantage over Lazio, but the race is still very tight at the top of the table. After the match, Lazio boss Stefano Pioli said that he did not envisage a defeat after having played so well against one of the top teams in the country.

Former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal of the game. This was the first defeat suffered by Lazio since the 3-0 loss against Juventus back in November.

Such has been their imperious form that many have placed Lazio as the favourites to grab the final Champions League qualification spot. The club had narrowly missed out on this position last season, as poor form towards the end of the campaign cost them dearly. Lazio will not be allowed any time to remorse over this defeat, as they have to prepare for the next league match – against Milan.

“We worked very hard and basically were the only team playing. Napoli made the most of one chance in the first half and from then on they were able to sit back and wait for a counter-attack.We created several chances and it’s a shame, because even with so many players missing we didn’t deserve to lose today. So far we have received compliments for our performances, but today the only thing missing was the result. In terms of technique it wasn’t our best match,” said Pioli. Lazio have slipped to fifth place due to this defeat.
